In a shocking turn of events, the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has successfully charged six individuals with corruption and payroll fraud in the Northern Region. The accused—Yakubu Tahidu, Abdulai Abukari Sadic, Sammy Suuk, Mohammed Yusif Jay, Stafford Korletey Azudey-Barres, and Osman Issahaku—face a total of 17 counts of corruption-related offences, all stemming from an alleged scheme that caused financial loss to the state.
The details of the case are truly eye-opening. Abdulai Abukari Sadic, the Yendi Municipal IPPD Coordinator, and Sammy Suuk, a Schools Improvement Support Officer, are believed to have played key roles in facilitating the fraudulent payments. Meanwhile, Mohammed Yusif Jay, the former headteacher of Balogu M/A JHS, is accused of continuing to validate salaries even after being reassigned. Stafford Korletey Azudey-Barres, an Assistant Chief Accounts Technician at the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department, is alleged to have aided in the processing of these illicit payments. And last but not least, Osman Issahaku, the current headteacher of Balogu M/A JHS, is facing charges for his involvement in validating these fraudulent salaries.
The implications of this corruption scandal are significant, with the OSP having recovered a staggering GH¢106,000 in funds that were fraudulently obtained. It is a stark reminder of the importance of accountability and transparency in all levels of government, and the need for robust measures to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
As the case continues to unfold in the High Court in Tamale, it serves as a sobering reminder of the damaging impact that corruption and payroll fraud can have on society as a whole. The conviction of these six individuals should serve as a warning to others who may be tempted to engage in similar illicit activities.
