Ghana advances SDG localisation agenda at UN-Habitat in Nairobi

Ghana has been making significant strides in advancing the localisation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), showcasing strong leadership and strategic progress at a recent high-level side event held at the United Nations Habitat Assembly in Nairobi.

Madam Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, Deputy Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, represented Ghana at the event and outlined the country’s practical approach and policy infrastructure for localising the SDGs through coordinated national and sub-national governance systems. She highlighted the role of the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC) as Ghana’s apex planning institution responsible for developing national policy frameworks and issuing guidelines to sectors and local authorities.

One of Ghana’s key initiatives in localising the SDGs is the Participatory Slum Upgrading Programme (PSUP), which has been implemented in areas like Ga Mashie to improve the living conditions of the urban poor. Madam Sowah emphasized Ghana’s commitment to deepening partnerships with UN-Habitat and other development actors to implement the New Urban Agenda and support the upcoming UN-Habitat Strategic Plan (2026–2029) and International Guidelines on People-Centred Smart Cities.

Through these efforts, Ghana is demonstrating its dedication to sustainable urban development and inclusive growth, setting an example for other nations to follow.
