Ghana Highway Authority condemns Achimota-Ofankor underpass vandalism

The Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) is cracking down on vandalism at the Achimota-Ofankor underpass, near Tantra Hill, after a recent incident left parts of the retaining wall damaged and exposed.

In a video shared on social media by the Buzstopboys, metal reinforcements (rebars) were seen sticking out of the wall, indicating that thieves had stolen the materials after the structure had already been compromised. The GHA has confirmed that a team of engineers had inspected the area prior to the theft and had planned to address the damage.

“This is a clear act of vandalism, and we strongly condemn it,” the Authority stated in response to the incident. “Tampering with public infrastructure is not only a crime, but it also puts the safety of the public at risk.”

Despite the damage, the GHA assures the public that the underpass remains safe for use. Plans are already in motion to repair the affected area and prevent future incidents of vandalism.

The GHA is urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity around roads or bridges to the police or the Authority’s Public Affairs Division. Offenders caught vandalizing public infrastructure will face legal consequences under Ghana’s Road Traffic Regulations, 2012 (LI 2180), section 114, subsection 4(b).

It is crucial for all Ghanaians to take pride in their infrastructure and work together to protect and preserve it for future generations. Let’s stand together against vandalism and ensure that our roads and bridges remain safe for
