GAVI CEO tours Ghana to evaluate immunization initiatives

As the Chief Executive Officer of GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance, Dr. Sania Nishtar is no stranger to the importance of immunization initiatives in improving global health outcomes. That’s why she recently embarked on a three-day visit to Ghana to evaluate the country’s progress and strengthen partnerships as it transitions from GAVI support.

During her visit, Dr. Nishtar had high praise for Ghana’s efforts, particularly noting the country’s impressive 80 per cent coverage rate for the third vaccine dose. She described Ghana as a model for other African nations to strive towards when it comes to immunization success.

One of the key components of Ghana’s transition roadmap from GAVI support by 2030 is its Investment Case for Immunization, which Dr. Nishtar welcomed as a crucial step in ensuring sustainable immunization efforts in the country.

Founded in 2000, GAVI has been instrumental in improving vaccine access for children in low-income countries, having immunized more than half of the world’s children against life-threatening diseases. Over the past 20 years, GAVI has worked closely with Ghana to introduce new vaccines, strengthen health systems, and reach remote and underserved populations.

Thanks to this long-standing collaboration, Ghana has become a shining example of immunization success in Africa. Dr. Nishtar’s visit to the country only further solidifies Ghana’s reputation as a leader in effective immunization initiatives.
