Ghana protesters accuse president of power grab after chief justice’s suspension

The streets of Accra were flooded with passionate protesters yesterday, as thousands of Ghanaians took a stand against what they see as a power grab by President John Dramani Mahama. The #SaveTheJudiciary Demo, organized by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and supported by other political parties such as the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), National Democratic Party (NDP), and the People’s National Party (PNP), aimed to voice opposition to the recent suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo.

As they marched through the streets of Accra, their message was clear: “Justice cannot be suspended”, “Protect our democracy now”, and “Our courts are not puppets”.

The demonstration culminated at the Supreme Court, where a petition was presented to the Judicial Council, calling for Chief Justice Torkornoo’s suspension to be reversed. The protesters were unwavering in their demand for justice and accountability, refusing to back down until their voices were heard.
The show of unity among the various political parties highlighted the widespread concern over the state of Ghana’s judiciary and the perceived overreach by the President. The demonstration served as a powerful reminder of the importance of upholding democratic principles and the rule of law.
