University Senior Staff suspend strike after government meets demands

After nearly two days of strike action, the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), the Technical University Administrators Association of Ghana (TUAAG), and the Federation of University Senior Staff Associations of Ghana (FUSSAG) have officially suspended their strike following the government’s agreement to meet their demands.

The strike, which began on May 21, 2025, was a response to a six-month delay in implementing an agreement to improve staff conditions of service. Union leaders expressed frustration with past and present governments for failing to honour the agreed terms.

In a statement signed by SSA-UoG National Chairman, George Ansong, the unions announced the suspension of the strike after the Ministry of Finance issued the long-awaited letter to implement the agreement. The letter confirms that the new conditions will take effect from November 1, 2024, and the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has approved the immediate payment of entitlements by universities.

This decision comes as a relief to university staff members who have been anxiously awaiting a resolution to the ongoing dispute. With the government finally meeting their demands, staff members can now return to work and focus on providing quality education to their students.

In his statement, Mr. Ansong urged all members to resume work on Friday, May 23, 2025. The agreement represents a significant victory for the university staff unions, demonstrating the power of collective bargaining and solidarity in achieving fair working conditions.
