Oforikrom, Ga East among areas marked for demolition after Sunday’s floods

The recent heavy rainfall in Koforidua, Eastern Regional capital, has left many residents in shock and devastation. The flood waters not only destroyed properties but also displaced scores of people from their homes. The aftermath of the flooding is truly heartbreaking, especially for those affected in areas such as Nsukwao, Sentimental, Zongo, Musuko, and Two Streams.
One of the areas marked for demolition after Sunday’s floods is Oforikrom, Ga East. This decision comes as no surprise as the intensity and sheer destruction caused by the flood waters have left many homes uninhabitable. The inability of the drains in the township to convey the running water has been attributed to the flooding. The outdated drainage system, filled with refuse and debris, was unable to handle the volume of water brought on by the heavy rainfall.

The Central Business District (CBD) was also severely affected as the flood waters submerged the entire market, leaving items floating freely. It is clear that immediate action needs to be taken to prevent such devastation from occurring in the future. The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) is currently assessing the extent of the damage in severely affected communities.
It is evident that proper infrastructure and sanitation measures need to be put in place to prevent such disasters from reoccurring. The government and relevant authorities must prioritize the upgrading of drainage systems and the implementation of effective waste management practices in order to mitigate the impact of heavy rainfall in the future.
It is important for residents of Oforikrom, Ga East, and other flood-prone areas to stay informed and prepared for any future weather-related disasters. By working together and implementing proactive measures, we can minimize the impact of natural disasters and protect our communities from devastation. Let us all do our part to ensure the safety and well-being of our fellow
