Ghana, Algeria enhance cooperation in key sectors

Ghana and Algeria have recently made strides in strengthening their cooperation in key sectors, marking a new chapter in their long-standing relationship. During a bilateral agreement, the two countries pledged to establish a direct air link between Accra and Algiers, launch a strategic partnership in oil and gas, and enhance cooperation in security and intelligence sharing.

This agreement comes on the heels of an official visit to Algiers by Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who held high-level meetings with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf. Mr Ablakwa emphasized the historic ties between Ghana and Algeria, highlighting Ghana’s support for Algeria during its struggle for independence in the 1960s.

The longstanding relationship between Ghana and Algeria dates back to Ghana’s early support for the Algerian people’s fight for freedom. Ghana was the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to back the struggle for Algerian independence and to have close ties with the National Liberation Front. This history of solidarity and mutual support has laid the foundation for the recent agreements aimed at boosting cooperation between the two nations.

In the upcoming 4th session of the Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation in Accra, Ghana and Algeria will further solidify their partnership. This ongoing commitment to collaboration in various sectors, including oil and gas, air transportation, and security, showcases the depth of Ghana and Algeria’s relationship.

As Ghana and Algeria continue to work together towards mutual prosperity and development, the future looks bright for these two African nations with a shared history of solidarity and friendship.
